Air Surveillance and Analysis Section

The Air Surveillance and Analysis Section collects measurements of ambient level
pollutants throughout a statewide monitoring network to ensure that State and Federal
air quality standards are met. We operate, collect and report ambient air data from
air monitoring stations located on Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai.

Air Monitoring Station

We maintain a web site that displays near real-time air quality data from specific
monitoring stations on Oahu and the Big Island: Daily Air Quality Data website

Air Quality Data

Provides data for the Department’s Vog Index hotline (808) 885-7143.

Air Surveillance and Analysis Section Monitors for:

  • Carbon Monoxide

  • Nitrogen Dioxide

  • Sulfur Dioxide

  • Ozone

  • Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5)

  • Air Toxics including:

    • Metal Compounds

    • Volatile Organic Compounds

    • Carbonyl Compounds

  • Special Monitoring:

    • New Year Fireworks

    • VOG (volcanic haze)

    • Agricultural Burns (sugarcane)

    • Geothermal (Hydrogen Sulfide)

What’s new at the Air Section?

  1. We are expanding Air Monitoring Services to include additional sulfur dioxide
sites at Pahala and Mountain View.

  2. We are proposing new air toxics parameters to include acetone and chromium 6.

  3. We are participating in the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s air
monitoring program located at Mauna Loa Observatory.

  4. We are evaluating passive sampling method for sulfur dioxide.

  5. We passed performance audits conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency
and Clean Air Branch for all pollutants.

  6. Staff attended factory certified training for continuous gaseous and particulate monitors.
