Kathleen Uhl, M.D.

Kathleen Uhl, M.D., is the Director of the Office of Women's Health (OWH) and Assistant Commissioner for Women's Health at FDA.  Dr. Uhl joined FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) as a medical officer in the Office of Clinical Pharmacology and Biopharmaceutics with the Division of Anti-infective Drug Products in 1998. She later joined the Office of Postmarketing Drug Risk Assessment serving as a Deputy Division Director. Prior to joining OWH, she was the Medical Team Leader for the Pregnancy and Lactation Labeling Team in CDER.  She has been an active member of numerous working groups in the FDA for the development of Guidances for Industry and Reviewers, and Proposed Rulemaking.

She received her baccalaureate degree in Chemistry from Temple University, graduating summa cum laude, and her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. She is board certified in Family Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP). She received postgraduate training, completing a Medical Research Fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) and a Clinical Pharmacology Fellowship at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). She served as an officer in the US Army and was an investigator in malaria research and drug metabolism at WRAIR. She is currently a Captain in the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service.

Dr. Uhl retains dual faculty appointments as associate professor in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine at USUHS in Bethesda, Md. She continues to be active in clinical medicine at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center Outpatient Medicine Clinic. Dr. Uhl has been an active member of the scientific educational committee in CDER and served as the chair of Scientific Rounds, a regulatory science discussion modeled after clinical grand rounds. She is a reviewer for several medical journals and has been a member of technical review panels for numerous FDA grants. She was a core member for the Medicine and Pharmaceuticals WorkGroup of the National Children's Study on Environmental Effects on Child Health and Development and served on the Advisory Panel for the National Library of Medicine's Drugs and Lactation Database. She is a member of NICHD's Alliance for Obstetric Pharmacology, CDC's Inter-agency Initiative on Safety Surveillance, and the Interagency Safe Motherhood Initiative. Dr. Uhl is a member of Safe Medication Use Expert Committee for U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP). She is a member of the board of directors for the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT).
