On Wednesday, June 4, Undersecretary for Emergency Preparedness and Response/Director of FEMA, Michael Brown, traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to meet with local officials and announce the recent award of $29,080,000 to the State of Tennessee to enhance the capabilities of the state and local first responder groups. These funds can be used for equipment, training, planning and exercises for first responders. In addition, a portion of the funds is available to help offset the costs associated with enhanced security measures deployed under the heightened threat period during the conflict in Iraq.
The Department of Homeland Security has made available more than $4.4 billion nationwide in funding for grants since March 1, 2003 for first responder groups and state and local governments to enhance response and preparedness capabilities.
