Indian Health Service recognizes that tobacco use is a major issue in American Indian/ Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. User data is available through the dental user survey; lung cancer rates are available through the Indian Health Service epidemiology programs. Currently, there are concerted efforts by the Alaska Department of Health to capture Alaska Natives in their Adult Tobacco Surveys. Six (tribal) Support Centers for Tobacco Programs, funded by Center for Disease Control (CDC) Office on Smoking and Health, are in the preliminary stages of conducting an AI/AN version of the Adult Tobacco Surveys in 2-3 tribal communities in their service areas. These efforts should yield tribal-specific data regarding knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of tobacco use.
