Disease Reporting Information: STD, HIV, AIDS

The accurate identification and timely reporting of STDs, HIV, and AIDS are integral components of successful disease prevention and control efforts. Timely reporting is important to assess morbidity trends and identify potential outbreaks of disease in order to develop and initiate early intervention and prevention measures of STDs; and to assist healthcare providers in the medical management of sex partners who may be infected.

As mandated by Hawai‘i Administrative Rule, Title 11, Department of Health, Chapter 156, Communicable Diseases, both laboratories and health care providers in Hawai‘i are required to report the following:

HIV
AIDS
Chlamydia trachomatis
Neiserria gonorrheae
Treponema pallidum (syphilis)
Haemophilus ducreyi (chancroid)
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Special notes to laboratories: Report any confirmative HIV positive test result, all levels of HIV viral load test results and all levels of CD4 test results (count and percent).

Special notes to health care providers: Immediately notify the STD Prevention Program office of any case of syphilis pending laboratory confirmation.

Confidentiality of case records is protected by state law in Chapter 325, section 101. The department may conduct investigation when requested by an authorized representative of the Director (Statute 321-29). Hawai‘i Department of Health and its representative are required to maintain confidentiality on all patient's information or record (Statute 325-101).

All cases of reportable STDs, HIV and AIDS should be reported within three working days.
