James C. Stansel served as the Acting General Counsel of the United States Department of Health & Human Services from January 1, 2008 to May 8, 2008. 

Mr. Stansel was a 1997 graduate of Yale Law School, where he was a senior editor of the Yale Law Journal and a recipient of the John M. Olin Prize for Best Paper on Law, Economics, and Public Policy.  He received a B.S. in Economics summa cum laude from Brigham Young University in 1994.  After graduation from law school, Mr. Stansel clerked for the Honorable Stephen H. Anderson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.  Before joining HHS, Mr. Stansel was a partner in the health care and food and drug groups at the Washington, D.C. office of Sidley Austin LLP. 

Mr. Stansel lives in Arlington, Virginia, with his wife, Kristina, and their three children.
