Juan A. del Real was nominated by President Reagan on April 17, 1981 to serve as General Counsel of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Before becoming General Counsel at HHS, Mr. del Real served as Assistant General Counsel to the Department where he was mainly responsible for providing legal services to the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) and the Office of the Secretary with respect to the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Mr. del Real was a partner with the firm of Hill, Christopher and Phillips of Washington, D.C from 1968 to1980 where he focused on complex civil corporate and commercial cases involving alleged violations of federal securities laws, trade secret litigation, and products liability claims.

From 1967 to 1968, Mr. del Real was Special Assistant to the President of Centra lAguirre Sugar Co. of San Juan, P.R. In 1966, he was assigned to the international financing department of Surrey, Karasik, Gould & Greene of Washington, D.C. Mr. del Real is a member of the American, District of Columbia, and Missouri Bar Associations.

He was born in Cuba on November 4, 1939, and became a naturalized American citizen of the United States on January 5, 1967. Currently, Mr. del Real and his wife, Claire, own and operate a bed-and-breakfast called the Shiverick Inn in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.
