| Introduction |
|
What will it take to provide better early education and care for Oregon’s children between the ages of 0-5? As public libraries and their supporters, we already know one key to his dilemma: public libraries. Oregon's public libraries can and already do help build early literacy skills in babies, toddlers, and preschool children through access to books, storytimes, parenting information, knowledgeable staff, and much more.
In recognition of this, the Multnomah County Library applied for and received an LSTA grant to launch the Oregon Statewide Early Literacy Initiative, a campaign and resource to encourage public libraries to offer programs and services aimed at preschool children. The resources on this site include a rationale for Why Early Literacy is important, What libraries can do to better work with pre-readers, What libraries are doing already to promote and build early literacy skills, recommendations and sources for How to obtain funding for public library programs, and finally a collection of Additional resources including early literacy websites with book suggestions, programming, songs, games, book lists, and more.
We hope that these resources help public libraries expand and improve upon the already fabulous work they're doing with the early literacy community.
