Chirostylidae

[Chirostylidae, galred.jpg=44KB]

Crabs in the family Chirostylidae, commonly called "pinchbugs" (but also called "squat lobsters", "pelagic red crabs", "swimming crabs", and "tuna crabs"), are small and red with long chelipeds. These were abundant among the rocks and cobbles on the upper slope and flat top of Patton Seamount on the 1999 DSV Alvin expedition, above 500m. They were commonly observed among the branchs of gorgonian soft corals, on the outer flank of the mountain (Text excerpted from Report of R/V Atlantis Cruise 3-36).
