Dating and domestic violence occurs in all socio-economic, educational, racial, and age groups and is defined as, any act, attempt or threat of force by a family member or intimate partner against another family member. At the heart of family violence are the issues of power and control. This fact sheet provides background information on dating and domestic violence, including behaviors used by the batterer to gain power and control and behavioral signs displayed by someone involved in an abusive relationship.
