Description

HIV/AIDS is a growing problem among American Indians and Alaska Natives. Even though the number of HIV and AIDS diagnoses for American Indians and Alaska Natives represents less than 1% of the total number of HIV/AIDS cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), American Indians and Alaska Natives in 2005 ranked 3rd in rates of HIV/AIDS diagnosis, after blacks (including African Americans) and Hispanics. This publication discusses HIV/AIDS among American Indians and Alaska Natives, including statistics, risk factors and barriers to prevention, and CDC prevention to reduce the incidence of HIV infection.
