In these true-color MODIS images from January 2003, Tropical Cyclone Fari was appraoching and then covering Madagascar, off southeastern Afirca in the southern Indian Ocean. Packing maximum sustained winds of 46 mph with gusts to 58 mph on Jan. 28, Fari was expected to briefly intensify and then quickly weaken as its center moved closer to land. At the top left corner of the image from Jan. 28 is southern Mozambique, which is separated from Madagascar by the Mozambique Channel. The small island in the bottom right corner of the image is Reunion Island.
