Neoplasms, Cerebrovascular diseases, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases and then Unintentional
Injuries.
As noted in the 2000-2001 Regional Differences in Indian Health, 21.6 percent of all deaths
in the IHS service area were caused by diseases of the heart, followed by Malignant Neoplasms,
Unintentional Injuries, Diabetes Mellitus, and Chronic Liver Disease & Cirrhosis.
The five leading causes of AI/AN youth for ages 1 to 4 were unintentional injuries, Congenital
Anomalies, Homicide and Legal Intervention, Malignant Neoplasms, and Diseases of the Heart
The five leading causes of AI/AN youth for infants (births to under 1 year) were Congenital
Anomalies, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Disorders Relating to Short Gestation and Low Birthweight,
Unintentional Injuries, and Pneumonia and Influenza.
