FAQ
IndexCat -- Records with Dates Only
Question: In IndexCat - Series 1, why do
some records show only dates without authors or titles?
Answer:
These records relate to case studies. In the printed Index-Catalogue - Series
1, indications for cases applies to two formats:
- The first uses daggers to indicate a case (single dagger) or cases (two
daggers).
- The second applies the standard heading 'Cases' as a rubric within a
subject heading.
- The rubric interfiles with analytic author and titles under a subject
heading.
- Individual cases are sub-arranged by year under the rubric
In converting Series 1, NLM did not introduce the 'Cases' rubric or print and
translate the daggers for displays.
- Records with the rubric contain the term 'Cases' in the basic record
display within the Rubric field of IndexCat
- Records originally printed with dagger(s), do not have daggers in IndexCat
nor do they have the 'Cases' rubric in the basic record display.
- Titles do not usually display in these records.
- Some records may display authors.
- Case records usually display year(s), journal title and pagination.
- Many contain subject headings that indicate that it is a case. These
subject headings usually contain phrases such as: (Cases of) or (Case and
statistics of).
NLM is currently determining the best method for correcting these records.
They represent less than 0.05% of the total records in IndexCat Series 1.
Also, in Series 4, a few records in Greek or Cyrillic scripts may lack titles. These
are often records for journal titles.
