FAQ
IndexCat -- Records with Strange Characters

Question:  Why do I sometimes get strange characters in my display?
Answer:

Example:

IndexCat Strange Characters example

These strange or nonsense characters are usually incorrect representations of vernacular characters that IndexCat cannot correctly display. They are often Greek script. IndexCat contains over 2,000 records that are primarily in Greek script and another 4,000 records that are not necessarily Greek but contain Greek words or characters. In Series 4, a few records are in Cyrillic and Hebrew scripts.

In the future, the software that supports IndexCat will properly display these scripts. Therefore, we decided to retain these records rather than initially exclude them.

In other instances, an unknown marker for a character appears when the original copy was blurred or unclear for keying. We’d like information on these individual citations so we can correct the records. Please report the ID number for these records to NLM at hmdref@nlm.nih.gov.
