This series of images from late August 2002 shows thick smoke being produced by numerous fires (red dots) in western Russia. In some of the images, several countries of Eastern Europe can be seen along the left edge, and at top left is part of the Gulf of Finland. For example, on August 28, 2002, Russia is at right, and at left (from top to bottom) are Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. These images were acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite.
