Telework/Telecommuting
Telework (also called telecommuting) is working at home or a satellite office, telework center, or telecommunity center near home one or more days a week -- instead of commuting to the main office or place of business.

Employers around the world are using telework programs to boost productivity and reduce office and real estate costs. And because employees value the flexibility telework gives them to balance their work and home life, telework programs help employers keep valued staff and recruit qualified personnel.

The Oregon Department of Energy supports telework in Oregon, because it conserves fuel, relieves traffic congestion, and improves air quality -- and because it makes good business sense.

Looking for a telework job?
There is no listing of private employers who have active telework programs. Most do not publicize their programs because of the competitive nature of their businesses.

It is important to point out that in almost all cases, telework is done by long-term permanent employees of a company where there is a mutual understanding of the business´ protocols. Most employees who telework do so part time, usually one to two days per week. If you are seeking a telework situation, you are advised to find an employer that would consider letting you telework at a point in the future when you become a permanent employee. A good resource for those looking for a telework job is the Telecommuting, Teleworking, and Alternative Officing Web site.
