HISTORIC PRESERVATION ISSUES 

COURSE SCOPE

The Historic Preservation Issues Course addresses the key legislation in preserving the rich heritage of the United States.

This course also focuses in on Section106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (N H P A) which requires Federal agencies to take into account the effects of their undertakings on historic properties, and afford the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation a reasonable opportunity to comment. These regulations, "Protection of Historic Properties," were revised in May 1999 and will be codified at 36 C.F.R. Part 800 and are part of this course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the Historic Preservation Issues Course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of each Act in preserving America's heritage:

    • The Antiquities Act of 1906

    • The National Historic Preservation Act of 1966

    • The Archeological and Historic Preservation Act of 1974

    • The American Indian Religious Freedom Act (1978)

    • The Archaeological Resource Protection Act (1979)

    • The Abandoned Shipwreck Act (1987)

    • Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (1990)

  • Know how each Executive Order broadened the awareness of why it is important to preserve our heritage:

    • Locating Federal Facilities on Historic Properties in Our Nation's Central Cities E O 13006 (1996)
