OVERVIEW

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) administers a variety of laws and regulations concerning employment benefits. These include:

• Retirement Benefits governed by the Employment Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA);
• Health Benefits related to the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) and other federal laws affecting group health plans;
• Leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act;
• Benefits under Federal Contracts governed by the McNamara-O'Hara Service Contract Act and the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts; and
• Other Leave Benefits.

In addition, the Federal-State Unemployment Insurance (UI) Program provides unemployment benefits to eligible workers who become unemployed through no fault of their own, and the Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP) administers four major disability compensation programs, one of which provides wage replacement benefits, medical treatment, and other benefits to federal workers or their dependents who are injured at work or acquire an occupational disease.
