This will work if you are teaching skills that are in the "Zone of Proximal Development", or one level above the skills/knowledge that they currently have. Example:

If someone knows how to add and subtract you may be able to teach them how to multiply, which is in the zone of proximal development. However, you will not be able to teach them how to divide, unless you first teach them how to multiply.
