Shenandoah National Park has contracted to resurface 10 miles of Skyline Drive. Work is expected to commence during the week of September 15, 2008. The work will entail chip sealing the following areas on Skyline Drive: MP 37 to MP 47 in the Central District.  Chip sealing is a surface treatment that preserves and extends the life of the road, involving the application of liquid asphalt and stone chips. Hammaker East, a subsidiary of Russell Standard Corporation in Pennsylvania, is the primary contractor.

During the project Skyline Drive will remain open, but one lane of traffic will be closed while the contractor is working, with expected delays of less than 15 minutes. Work will take place Monday through Friday. All lanes of traffic will be open during weekends and federal holidays. Bicyclists and motorcyclists should be aware of loose gravel on the road surface.

Line striping will begin after the road surface treatment has been completed. Visitors are reminded to drive with additional care along these sections of road in the park, especially at night and during periods of fog.

The project is expected to take about four weeks to complete, however, work may be delayed due to weather.
