Nominee For Assistant Secretary For Disability Employment
Named Dr. Roy Grizzard To Become First Assistant Secretary For
ODEP
WASHINGTONU.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced that
the President intends to nominate Dr. W. Roy Grizzard Jr. as the new assistant
secretary for the office of disability employment policy.
Roy is the right person to lead the Office of Disability
Employment Policy and the presidents New Freedom Initiative, said
Chao. Roys experience as the commissioner of the Virginia
Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired gives him the tools necessary to
pursue the goal of increasing employment of persons with
disabilities.
Grizzard is currently commissioner for the Department for the Blind and
Vision Impaired for the commonwealth of Virginia. In his capacity as chief
administrator, Grizzard manages an operating budget of $22,500,000 that funds
comprehensive services to the states blind, visually impaired and deaf
blind, as well as overseeing 196 employees.
Prior to his current position Grizzard was a personnel administrator for
the Henrico County Public Schools. Grizzard worked nearly 20 years in the
Henrico Public School System, rising from a teaching position to assistant
principal.
Grizzard holds a bachelors of science in health and physical education
and a masters of science in education administration and supervision from the
Virginia Commonwealth University. Grizzard also holds a doctor of education in
educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University. Grizzard is a board
member of Prevent Blindness Virginia and chairman of the research committee of
the Council of State Administrators of Vocational Rehabilitation.
Grizzard who is legally blind is married to Nancy Gormours Grizzard and
has three children and two grandchildren.
