Geographic Information Systems

Applications in Wildlife Management

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a powerful tool in wildlife management. GIS is used to associate and analyze any spatial data. Much of the habitat inventory and monitoring work the USFWS does involves spatial relationships. GIS allows users to overlay layers of data much like overlaying transparent maps. Data can then be manipulated as needed or used to display cartographic maps. Currently we use the ArcGIS 9x ArcInfo software package by ESRI.
The Devils Lake Wetland Management District Office is striving to keep on the cutting edge of technology and employing new skills and technology to improve the quality of our work. We are constantly looking into new products and techniques that will improve our wildlife and habitat protection. If you have ideas on improvements we can make to our system please contact our office.
For those just getting started in ArcGIS the software learning curve can be steep. The Virtual Campus provided by ESRI provides many training opportunities for various aspects of the program. Our own GIS specialists  have developed GIS training tutorials specific to USFWS applications. These tutorials are not meant to replace official training from the software manufacturers and they are not a comprehensive guide. If you wish to use any of the tutorials we have developed feel free to download them and utilize whatever information is helpful to you.

Check back for updates. These tutorials are a work in progress.
