Delivering Solutions for a World in Motion

NHI Message Board as New Source of Information
The National Highway Institute would like to invite you to take advantage of its newest communication technique between trainers and trainees: the NHI Message Board. The Message Board, which was launched last August, is already proving to be a useful source of information for instructors and customers. While NHI welcomes any questions concerning its training activities, this forum is designed for new and future instructors who would like to ask questions related to their own training activities, either in advance or after participating in a Trainer Development course.

What Is a Message Board?
A Message Board is a place in cyberspace where users all over the World Wide Web can discuss issues or express opinions instantly online. With the implementation of the National Highway Institute's Instructor Certification Program, NHI wanted to give its current and future instructors every opportunity to succeed. By using this existing Web technology, NHI created their own Message Board to serve as a "One Stop Support Shop" to provide trainers with information and guidance for up-to-date classroom instruction.

How to Use the Message Board
When you want to contribute to the dialogue on the NHI Message Board, enter the NHI Web page, then click on "Message Board" located at the bottom of the left-hand column. After selecting the "Submit" button, simply enter your name and start writing your questions, comments, or responses.

NHI will introduce a new training topic each month or will take suggestions from our instructors. Please contact Ilse van Goth, Training Specialist at (703) 235-0529 or at ilse.vangoth@fhwa.dot.gov with your questions and suggestions.

New NHI Pavement Courses Available
The Pavement Management (PM) Systems course (#13135) is now ready for delivery. This course provides an overview of PM and describes its primary components from the basic to the most complex systems. It outlines the step-by-step methodology for developing, implementing, and maintaining a PM system, and identifies key elements such as relational databases, automated data collection equipment, and multi-year prioritization. This course is designed for PM practitioners at engineering and management levels. Several courses have already been scheduled for winter and spring of 1999. Please consult the NHI Web site for a course location nearest you, or contact the NHI Training Course Coordinator Lynn Cadarr at (703) 235-0528 to request this course.

NHI will also introduce a training course entitled Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) Production Facilities (course #13144). This course is the result of a partnership among the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the HMA Industry. It covers the entire HMA Production Facilities process and addresses the following topics: types of plants; drying and heating systems; emission control systems, feeders, and conveyor systems; storage systems; plant operation and maintenance; and quality control and quality assurance. This course is designed for project engineers, lead inspectors, plant supervisors, and all others involved with HMA plant production.

Check every issue of Public Roads for the latest training and educational activities of the NHI.
