About Us

FHWA Hawaii Division is the primary federal surface transportation agency in Hawaii, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa. The agency is responsible for the development and preservation of efficient and safe transportation facilities, including: freeways, highways, bridges, scenic byways, intermodal centers, roadside rests, and traveler information. As unique as the Pacific locations it oversees, the Hawaii Division has the challenge to alleviate congestion, promote safety, and protect the environment from traffic impacts in the urbanized areas of Honolulu, Oahu. Oahu gains the equivalent of a city in visitors each day.

The Division is responsible for passing through approximately $168 million in annual federal aid to the Hawaii State Department of Transportation and the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization through a variety of formula, grant, and earmark programs. The agency performs oversight and monitors the State DOT's and MPO's programs and projects and ensures compliance of federal laws and regulations. The Hawaii Division's Annual Performance Plan Goals are: Safety, Mobility and Productivity, Environment, National Homeland Security, and Organizational Excellence.
