LAW AND RULES

Regulations regarding the licensure for professional counselors and marriage and family therapists and the practice of counseling and marriage and family therapy by licensed individuals in Oregon fall into two categories: statutes and rules.

Statutes are laws enacted, and may only be changed, by the legislature. The Board has responsibility for implementing and administering a portion of one chapter of the Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS): ORS Chapter 675.705 through 675.835. Click here to access ORS 675.

Rules are written and adopted by the Board. Rules support the statute: implement its provisions, interpret content, define terms, or provide more detailed procedures or requirements. The Board’s rules are found in Oregon Administrative Rules Chapter 833. Please note that the on-line version may not contain the most recent updates, so be sure to follow instructions to find the most recent text. Click here to access OAR 833.

In addition to Chapter 675, following are other related laws of interest:

ORS 676.160, Processing of Complaints Against Health Professionals

ORS 419B.005-419B.050, Child Abuse Reporting
