LPC EXAMINATION
In order to be reviewed for possible entrance to an upcoming exam, applicants must have provided all necessary information and forms for the Board to review. Please keep in mind that it may take several months to review an application once it has been received. When the Board has approved an application, notification will be sent to you on how to proceed to take the exam. You will need to follow these instructions explicitly.

For Oregon LPC, the Board requires passage of an examination consisting of two parts: a competency exam (NBCC National Counselor Exam, Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor exam, Certified Rehabilitation Counselor exam, and other exams approved by the Board) and an Oregon law and rules section.  The documentation for the competency exam must show that it was passed within 10 years of application for Oregon licensure.

Once the degree information has been approved, an applicant is eligible to sit for the next available exam. The Board uses the NCE administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors and must notify NBCC of the persons scheduled to sit for the exam at least 60 days prior to the scheduled date and include information regarding special needs of exam candidates (i.e., disability, non-Saturday testing due to religious reasons). Candidates send the registration form, with payment ($120), directly to NBCC. Once NBCC has a list of approved candidates from the Board, they conduct a one-to-one match.

The Board does not have study guides for the exam. NBCC offers a study guide for purchase.

CONTACT THE BOARD IF YOU WISH TO SIT FOR AN EXAM.  The Board does not automatically send applicants a registration form.  It is the applicant's responsibility to contact the Board to see if they are eligible to sit for the exam and obtain the necessary form.

NBCC will send candidates admit letters with site information 2-3 weeks prior to the exam. Scores will be sent directly to the candidates approximately 2-4 weeks after the exam date. NBCC hand scores all candidates´ answer sheets who fail the test within two points before they mail the results. Any candidate requesting a hand scoring should make the request to the Board office. The Board then sends the request and the original answer sheet to NBCC for processing. There is a $20 fee for hand scoring for those candidates who fail the test by more than two points.
