	Fort Scott National Historic Site Saws and Scalpels

An important function located at Fort Scott during the Civil War was that of the U.S. Army General Hospital, located in the 1840s post hospital. Sick and wounded Union soldiers (even some Confederates) from throughout the vicinity came to Fort Scott for treatment. Students in this activity become part of a medical diagnostic team determining symptoms, diseases, and treatments.

			Did You Know? Fort Scott never did have a wall around it. It was built upon a bluff which had three steep sides and opened up to prairie in a gradual slope on the south. Many forts were not built with walls at the time; the fort with a stockade is more a product of Hollywood mythology than actual fact.
