I teach high beginner adults.  Rather than dialog journals, I write 
each student a letter when he/ she starts the class.  In the letter I 
invite the student to write to me (outside of class) if s/he wants to 
and has time.  Because many of my students work, I don't want it to 
seem like a bad thing if they don't write.  A relatively small number 
write and we correspond during the semester but those who do enjoy it.
