For me, Tom's version is a bit harder but still easily manageable. Seeing
the same exercise in Spanish was enlightening; I am maybe a low-intermediate
reader of Spanish and found Hillary's post a lot more difficult. On the
other hand, my advanced ESL students had little trouble with the original
version Dottie posted. I wonder if this would work as well in a language
with infixes and circumfixes or with more heavily compounded words -- and
what the implications are for teaching reading.

Anidroccg to rcraeseh at an Esilgeh utisreviny it d’nseot mettar in waht
oedrr the lrettes in a wrod are, the olny inatropmt tnihg is taht frsit and
lsat letter is at the rhgit pcale. The rset can be a tatol mses and you can
slitl raed it wuohtit a pelborm. Tihs is bsuacee we do not raed erevy

This version keeps the first and last letter but reverses the letter
inbetween. Is this harder or easier.
