What is a fuel cell?

A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, with water and heat as its by-product.  As long as fuel is supplied, the fuel cell will continue to generate power.  Since the conversion of the fuel to energy takes place via an electrochemical process, not combustion, the process is clean, quiet and highly efficient – two to three times more efficient than fuel burning.

No other energy generation technology offers the combination of benefits that fuel cells do.  In addition to low or zero emissions, benefits include high efficiency and reliability, multi-fuel capability, siting flexibility, durability, scalability and ease of maintenance.  Fuel cells operate silently, so they reduce noise pollution as well as air pollution and the waste heat from a fuel cell can be used to provide hot water or space heating for a home or office.

See what great applications fuel cells can be used for!

What's New in the Industry -

  • Fuel Cell Vehicles Complete Cross-Country Tour. Nine automakers showcased their hydrogen-fueled and fuel cell vehicles on a publicity tour across the United States, visiting 31 cities in 18 states in 13 days.  The Hydrogen Road Tour '08 began in Portland, Maine, and ended in Los Angeles, California, and was a collaboration of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the California Fuel Cell Partnership, the National Hydrogen Association, and the participating automakers with Linde and Air Products and Chemicals on hand to provide the hydrogen.  There were fuel cell vehicles from General Motors Corporation, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen, as well as the BMW Hydrogen Series 7, which burns hydrogen in an internal combustion engine.  Tour highlights included two new hydrogen stations opening in Billerica, Massachusetts and Rolla, Missouri.

  • Plug Power Conducts Successful Field Trial in Rural India. Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL), Plug Power Inc. and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), have successfully conducted a field trial involving Plug Power’s GenSys® prime power fuel cell product in rural India. Performed at a TTSL cell tower site in Bijnour, Uttar Pradesh, the field trial was designed to test both the performance of the GenSys fuel cell and the LPG refueling infrastructure for cell tower applications.  The GenSys system, commissioned and operated by Plug Power, was used as the primary power source for meeting the site’s total power load – consisting of the base transceiver station (BTS) equipment, air conditioners, and AC lighting.
