New Approach to Self-Achievement Project

The New Approach to Self-Achievement, or N.A.S.A., Project is a five-week summer project for students attending Cleveland Municipal and Lorain County Schools who are eighth- or ninth-graders in the 2006-2007 academic year. The project is designed to capture students' interest in science and mathematics. Located in an urban setting, the N.A.S.A. Project seeks to target students who have a cumulative GPA between 2.0 and 3.0, who demonstrate a deficiency in the areas of mathematics and science, and who require a gentle push to reach their academic and life potential. The project also helps prepare students for the Ohio Achievement Test by providing a weekly Scholastic Challenge Contest.
The project includes classroom instruction, facilitated projects applying mathematics and scientific concepts with innovative proficiency test strategies, computer classes, and a variety of enrichment activities. These activities include field trips and tours to the NASA Glenn Research Center and science museums under the careful supervision of the N.A.S.A. Project staff. A unique component of the project is the Saturday parent-student workshops, designed to help the student and parent learn more about preparing for state proficiency tests, developing financial literacy, and discovering new methods to control and create an environment supportive of a child's development.
The project is in collaboration with Cleveland Municipal Schools and Lorain County Schools.
