The Kerguelen Islands sit in the South Indian Ocean in the triangle formed by Australia, Africa, and Antarctica. At 1,850 meters, the islands’ highest point is Mount Ross, capped with a white glacier in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer image, captured on March 4, 2004 by NASA’s Aqua satellite. Glaciation is also evident in the jagged fjords cut into the islands. The Kerguelen Islands, owned by France, consist of one main island surrounded by about 300 smaller islands.
