Activities, Events, and Campaigns
NIDCD's Office of Health Communication and Public Liaison (OHCPL) is the first point of contact for individuals seeking information about Institute activities. Public liaison activities include providing information to inquirers about research findings, diseases and disorders, health messages, resources, clinical trials, and other activities of the Institute. Answers to inquirers about these activities are accomplished by writing articles about Institute findings, preparing publications, attending meetings, and developing relationships with voluntary and professional health agencies and organizations.
Here are some examples of NIDCD activities that include members of the public:
- The National Deafness and Other Communications Disorders (NDCD) Advisory Council. The function of the Council is to advise the Director, NIDCD, on matters relating to the conduct and support of research and research training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to disorders of human communication.
- NIDCD seeks patients to participate in NIDCD clinical trials. Clinical research studies (sometimes called trials or protocols) are a means of developing new treatments and medications for diseases and disorders.
- NIDCD exhibits at national conferences of organizations that have an interest in the research areas of the Institute. NIDCD publications and other materials are disseminated to participants. Some of the conferences NIDCD has participated in include the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, American Academy of Audiology, Self Help for Hard of Hearing People, Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf, National Urban League, and American Public Health Association.
- NIDCD and the National Institute on Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have forged a partnership to develop a plan to improve awareness of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), a significant and completely preventable form of hearing loss. The result is WISE EARS!®, a national coalition of groups, agencies, and organizations committed to hearing preservation and the effective implementation of a national communication effort.
