Subject: LICENSEE WORKERS ON STRIKE
Discussion:
On April 7, 1999, Region II was notified that workers at Newport News
Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company (NNSD) in Newport News, Virginia, went
on strike on Monday, April 5, 1999, over a contract labor dispute. NNSD
holds two NRC licenses for conducting onsite industrial radiography and
instrument maintenance/calibration. Region II contacted NNSD personnel
who confirmed the information and indicated that all license requirements
were being complied with despite the strike. Some union workers who
perform licensed activities have crossed picket lines and are continuing
their duties. In addition, salaried personnel who manage licensed
operations have begun performing some licensed activities as their
current qualifications allow. NNSD personnel indicated that any
radiological training or certifications necessary to conduct licensed
activities have been or will be completed as needed to comply with all
NRC requirements. NNSD did not know how or when the strike would be
settled, but indicated that they would keep Region II informed of the
situation.
