Subject: FIRST FUEL STORAGE CASK WAS PLACED ON THE SITE ISFSI PAD

Discussion:

On July 24, 2000, Dresden placed their first dry fuel storage cask, a
Hi-Star 100 provided by Holtec International, on their Independent Spent
Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI) concrete pad. The cask is the first to
be licensed for and used to store fuel categorized as debris. Three of
the 68 fuel assembly spaces were used for this purpose. The other unique
characteristic about this cask is that the fuel is stored in a sealed
multi- purpose canister (MPC) within another sealed over-pack assembly
that is licensed for transportation to its ultimate storage location to
be provided by the Department of Energy (DOE). The over-pack will be
reused for transporting these MPCs from Dresden to the DOE. There are 13
more casks to load in order to recover the remaining Unit 1 spent fuel
located in the spent fuel pools for the two operating units.
