Subject: MAINE YANKEE LOADS TWO STEAM GENERATORS ONTO BARGE IN
PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT TO GTS DURATEK IN MEMPHIS, TN

Discussion:

On June 1, 2000, Maine Yankee completed the transport and loading of
steam generators Nos. 1 and 3 onto a barge in preparation for shipment to
and processing of the components at the GTS DURATEK facility in Memphis,
TN. Maine Yankee's health physics staff maintained appropriate access
controls during the transport and the barge loading was completed without
incident. In preparation for the shipment, Maine Yankee drained the
steam generators, sealed all penetrations, and applied a weather
resistant protective coating to the external surfaces. Final
preparations for shipment will include installation of structural
supports, shielding, tie-downs and personnel barriers. Maine Yankee's
transportation plan requires each barge and tow service tug to be
inspected and surveyed by a qualified marine inspection contractor prior
to transport. Each steam generator transport package is estimated to
weigh approximately 500 tons. Maine Yankee requested and received
approval from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) to establish a Marine
Safety Zone for the transport, which restricts access in a 200-yard
radial area around the barge to authorized persons, vehicles, or vessels.
The anticipated water transit route is approximately 2,750 miles,
starting at the plant's barge slip and ending at the Port of Memphis
Facility. Barge shipment of steam generators 1 and 3 is scheduled to
begin in early to mid-June 2000, followed by barge shipment of steam
generator No. 2 and the reactor pressurizer scheduled to begin in
late-June 2000.

Representatives from Maine's Department of Environmental Protection have
also been involved in monitoring preparations for shipment of the steam
generators and the pressurizer. The USCG will monitor the water transit
phase of the steam generator shipment.

Regional Action:

NRC staff reviewed preparations for shipment, observed barge loading, and
will continue to review preparations for shipment.
