Subject: INCORRECT WELD MATERIAL USED IN UNIT 1 STEAM GENERATOR
         GIRTH WELDS

Discussion:

On March 20, 2000, the licensee identified that an incorrect welding
filler material (rod) had been used in the final pass and initial pass of
the girth welds during installation of the Unit 1 steam generators. The
licensee reported that 7018 weld rod was used (vice 8018 weld rod) at
discreet locations of the girth weld on two of the four replacement steam
generators. The incorrect filler material has approximately 12 percent
lower tensile strength than the intended material. The licensee is
removing and replacing the incorrect filler material in the girth welds.
A Region based inspector responded to the site and is reviewing the
causes and corrective actions for this issue. The licensee indicates that
this issue should not affect the restart activities of D.C. Cook Unit 2.
