Subject: FIRST CONTAINER OF SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL TRANSFERRED TO ISFSI PAD
Discussion:
On June 26, 2002, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Yankee Atomic Electric
Company successfully completed the transfer of the first spent fuel
canister to their on site Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation
(ISFSI) Facility Pad. Spent fuel and GTCC waste will be transferred and
stored in the Multi-Purpose Canister (MPC) transportable dry storage
system developed by NAC, International (NAC-MPC). Dry cask storage is
being conducted under the general license provisions of 10CFR72, Part K
and 10CFR30.
Each Transportable Storage Canister (TSC) is approximately 10 feet high
and 6 feet in diameter. TSC #1 contains thirty-six spent fuel assemblies
with a total heat load of 8.35 kw. The process of transferring TSC #1
began on May 30 and was originally scheduled to be completed on June 12.
The delay in completion resulted from the licensee successfully
addressing challenges with respect to the overhead crane and vacuum
drying system. The licensee will begin the second canister transfer on
June 28, with the entire process taking approximately one year.
