Subject: HAZMAT EVENT AT PILGRIM ON 05/03/01

Discussion:

With the plant shut down for a refueling outage, Pilgrim staff identified
a smouldering drum in the plant protected area yard at about 8:30 PM on
May 3, 2001. The equipment was associated with an outage activity to
replace the protective coating (liner) in service water pipe. An epoxy
material associated with this activity had begun to smoke due to the
combination of the heat of the chemical reaction of the epoxy curing and
the relatively high ambient temperature in the area. Resulting fumes
entered the reactor plant facility through a nearby air intake.

Pilgrim station personnel requested local fire department support at
about 9:00 PM to help assess the condition from a HAZMAT perspective and
to support the station fire brigade in response to the smouldering drum.
The fumes were found to be an eye irritant, but posed no additional
immediate health risk. As a precaution due to the fumes being in the
plant, workers in the reactor building were evacuated at about 11:30 PM.
Also, the control room emergency ventilation system was placed in
service. Two individuals were taken to a local hospital for observation.
By about 2:30 AM on May 4, 2001, normal conditions were restored to the
reactor building and personnel access was granted.
