Local Cooperative Observer Information

Cooperative Observer Volunteers Wanted!

Your Topeka National Weather Service Forecast Office is in need of Observers in the following communities:

Jamestown

Centralia

Auburn

As a cooperative observer, you would be responsible for collecting daily precipitation, temperature, or river level data for your local community.  You would be responsible for keeping a record of these data, and submitting a monthly report to our forecast office, for archiving in the National Climate Data Center in Washington, D.C.

Your daily precipitation data is extremely useful for forecasting local flooding, drought monitoring, and river level forecasts.  Precipitation data is also useful for local agricultural interests, drinking water management, construction interests, and many other local projects affected by rainfall.  Local cooperative observers are integral when analyzing localized effects on weather patterns, and help us to create better forecasts for you and your community. As a cooperative observer volunteer you would be providing a valuable service for your National Weather Service, and your local community.

If you think you might be interested in becoming a cooperative observer, please send an email to Bill Newman, the data acquisition program manager, for more detailed information.  (email: Bill.Newman@noaa.gov)

We would like to thank all those who have helped us fill much needed observational positions in local communities, including the volunteers, local media agencies, and local communities for your continued support in helping us maintain a comprehensive weather observation network throughout northeastern Kansas.

Here are some of the awards our observers have received:

We thank you for your support!
