roads. The U.S. Interstate Highway System is among the finest in the world.
The Interstate Highway System is near completion. Construction began
more than 30 years ago in the 1950's. Many FHWA engineering careers
began with the building of this system. As these proud engineers end
their FHWA careers, they retire with the knowledge that they have seen
their dreams achieved.
Through vision and commitment, these men and women have built a fine
reputation for our organization. They are highway engineers who have had
exemplary, exciting, and satisfying careers in the Federal Highway
Administration ... careers that have made a difference.

The FHWA Engineer at Work
Our engineers hold positions in all FHWA locations ... from our
headquarters in Washington, D.C. to our regional, division, and Federal
Lands Highway field offices throughout the United States. The Federal
Highway Administration also has field offices outside the United States,
in several other nations.
Working in
Headquarters
If you become part of our headquarters staff, you will formulate policy
and provide guidance and direction to the field organization. The field
organization consists of our regional, division, field Federal Lands
Highway, and international staff.
Working in the Region
The field organization includes nine regional offices located
throughout the United States. Our regional staff specialists
coordinate and review the activities of the divisions, set regional
policy, and provide leadership and guidance in implementing the
various FHWA programs.
Working in the Divisions
A division office is located in each State, the District of Columbia,
and Puerto Rico. These offices are grouped under and report to the
nine regional offices. The division office staff works in cooperation with
State highway agencies to develop and improve the Federal-aid Highway
System. Division personnel provide information, advice, and guidance.
They review and approve actions concerning highway planning, design,
construction, and maintenance.
Working for the Federal
Lands Highway Division Offices
The FHWA has three Federal Lands Highway divisions:
These divisions provide transportation engineering services
to Federal agencies for the planning, design, construction, and
rehabilitation of the federally owned highways and bridges.
Such roadway include forest highway system roads, parkways and
park roads, Indian Reservation roads, Defense Access roads, and
other Federal roads.
Working in an
International Office
During your career at the FHWA, you may have opportunity to
work in one of our international offices. The FHWA has contributed
to the development of highway systems and programs in more than
70 nations, sharing technical advice and providing assistance.
Through its technology transfer programs, the FHWA exchanges
research findings and experience with other nations, which benefits
all of the highway transportation community.
Working in Research
and Development
The Federal Highway Administration has one of the most advanced
research facilities in the world, the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research
Center in McLean, Virginia. The research center performs a
significant role in testing new highway construction materials and
methods, as well as developing and evaluating the latest highway
safety and traffic control procedures. Research is conducted in
FHWA laboratories and in cooperation with State highway agencies
