Whitney Trail Maintenance - June 22 - 28, 2008The Mount Whitney Trail is a maintained route to the highest point in lower 48 states. The trail ascends the steep, narrow Lone Pine Creek drainage, and is framed by the granite peaks of the John Muir Wilderness. The trail to the summit, with expansive views over the Sierra and the Great Basin, provides a unique recreation opportunity. Base camp will be near Bighorn Park, at an elevation 10,500 feet. Primary work area will be near Mirror Lake, at elevations around 10,800 feet. For more information and to sign up, contact the American Hiking Society. Cottonwood Lakes Basin Restoration and Maintenance - July 27 – August 2, 2008Cottonwood Lakes Basin is nestled in the southern-most portion of the John Muir Wilderness. Mt. Langley dominates the northern skyline. At elevations around 11,000 feet, the Basin features numerous lakes, meadows, and forests of foxtail pine. Golden Trout ProjectTrout Unlimited (TU), California Trout (CalTrout) and the Federation of Flyfishers (FFF) are assisting the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in a collaborative effort to protect and restore the California Golden Trout in the Inyo National Forest.
