Fires and smoke in Central South America

This true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Terra satellite was captured on August 18, 2002. Fires (red dots) throughout the region are blanketing central South America with a layer of smoke. Clockwise from top left are Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Along the left edge of the image are the Andes Mountains.
