• Effects of wildfire on regional air quality: modeling the influences of climatic variability, forest succession, fuel loadings, and prescribed burning strategies on anthropogenic and natural emissions, smoke dispersion, and regional haze.
• Fire and climate in the inland Pacific Northwest: fire frequency and severity at multiple scales, and the effects of climatic variability, topography, and fuels
• The effects of climate change on disturbance regimes and mountain forest ecosystems of the American West.
• Landscape mapping of wildland fuels at multiple scales

His favorite places are arid mountain ecosystems, including the eastern Sierra Nevada, the White Mountains of Nevada, and the Rocky Mountain Front Range from Glacier National Park to southern Colorado.
