JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Registering for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) over the Internet is becoming a popular option for residents of northern Missouri.

During the ongoing recovery efforts that follow the June flooding, about 20 percent of those who have registered for disaster assistance have registered online at www.fema.gov.

"Anyone who has suffered damages as a result of the June flooding in northern Missouri should register for assistance with FEMA," said Michael Karl, federal coordinating officer for disaster operations in Missouri.  "Telephone lines are currently open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, or you can register online at any time."

FEMA’s online registration service became available in July, 2004. It was used for the first time during the recovery process for a disaster in the northern Mariana Islands in August, 2004.  It has been used increasingly since then.

Homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and private nonprofits can register for assistance online, or by calling toll free 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired.

FEMA disaster recovery experts urge Missourians in the affected areas to register with the agency even if they have insurance. FEMA does not duplicate insurance payments, but applicants who are under-insured may be reconsidered after claims have been settled.

Registration with FEMA is required separately from registration with any other disaster relief organizations.

Individual Assistance is available to homeowners and businesses in 10 Missouri counties: Clark, Gentry, Lewis, Lincoln, Linn, Livingston, Marion, Pike, Ralls and St. Charles.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
