The National Institute of Standards and Technology today honored Billy W. Mangum, leader of the Thermometry Group in the Chemical Science and Technology Laboratory, with the Allen V. Astin Measurement Science Award.
Mangum is being recognized for career long achievement and leadership in NIST’s program in temperature standards and thermometry. Under his guidance, NIST has provided significant technical leadership in the development of the International Temperature Scale of 1990. He worked with several international committees to assure that both technical quality and the needs of U.S. industry are reflected in the definition of this scale.
The NIST Thermometry Group, with his direction, continues to lead national and international committees focusing on the technical quality, international comparability, quality of calibrations and accessibility of the scale to U.S. industry.
NIST created the award in 1984 in tribute to its fifth director, Allen V. Astin. The honor recognizes outstanding achievement in advancement of measurement science or in the delivery of measurement services.
As a non-regulatory agency of the Commerce Department’s Technology Administration, NIST promotes U.S. economic growth by working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements and standards.
