NIST PRESENTS SAFETY AWARDS TO TWO FIRE ENGINEERING TECHNICIANS

The National Institute of Standards and Technology today recognized two employees for superior efforts in creating and maintaining a safe working environment.

Winners of the 1997 Safety Award are Laurean A. DeLauter, and Gary L. Roadarmel. Both are engineering technicians in the Fire Safety Engineering Division of NIST's Building and Fire Research Laboratory.

DeLauter and Roadarmel conducted, efficiently and without injury, more than 500 large-scale fire experiments over the past three years. These experiments involve constructing burn facilities, developing safe ignition scenarios, controlling and suppressing fires, and handling hazardous materials. While many of these experiments were conducted at NIST in the Large Fire Research Facility, approximately 100 experiments were conducted at remote locations.

First given in 1979, the NIST Safety Award for Superior Accomplishment recognizes significant contributions on the NIST Occupational Safety and Health program activities.

An agency of the Commerce Department's Technology Administration, NIST promotes economic growth by working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements and standards.
