NPS Research Assistants
Governors Island National Monument (New York, NY)
Location: New York, NY 10004
Position Description
Background Information:

For more than two centuries, the military communities on Governors Island were woven into the intricate social, political and economic tapestry that is New York City. From 1776-1996, Governors Island stood as a silent sentinel in New York Harbor, and provided protection of the ideals represented by the Statue of Liberty across the Bay. We invite you to explore the island's history as it evolved from colonial outpost to regional administrative center for the U.S. Army and Coast Guard.

Governors Island, a 172 acre island in New York Harbor, is administered jointly by the City and State of New York through the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation (GIPEC) and the National Park Service. The National Park Service administers 22 acres of the island that includes two historic forts, Fort Jay and Castle Williams.

Governors Island opened to the public on a seasonal basis during the summer of 2003 with the National Park Service playing an important role in the public access program. Each summer, GIPEC and the National Park Service has expanded public access and sponsored programs for nearly 70,000 visitors in 2007. Since we are a new National Park site, the contributions made by our volunteers will noticeably enrich our tours and public program offerings. We have a very small, team-oriented staff and there are many ways that volunteers can help create dynamic experiences for our visitors.

Position Description:

General Research

Season: on-going

Volunteers research reference materials on or off site to add to our growing body of knowledge regarding the history of Governors Island and its relationships with New York Harbor, New York City, American and world history.

Oral History Assistants - Many people who join us on tour have lived on Governors Island or have stories to share. We need people to capture the essence of these stories and record the person’s contact information so we can contact them later by phone, mail or email and record their oral histories. Their stories are very important to us and our tour schedule doesn't always give us the flexibilty to obtain this information.

Volunteers will receive training from the Volunteer Coordinator and park staff.

Volunteers will wear a standard uniform during the season. National Park Service Volunteer patches are provided by the park.

Government housing is not available.
