Position Description
Located near the north entrance of San Francisco Bay, the Point Bonita Lighthouse sits 140’ above the Pacific Ocean at the end of a dramatic one-half mile trail. Since 1855, the Point Bonita Lighthouse has aided ships through the treacherous waters of the Golden Gate. Through a cooperative agreement with the United States Coast Guard, National Park Service volunteers provide public access to the lighthouse. The Point Bonita volunteer and internship program is administered by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) at the Marin Headlands. Activities of the Point Bonita Intern involve interpretation (public speaking), visitor services, administrative assistance, and resource management and protection.
The Intern will wear the approved National Park Service volunteer uniform and be required to operate U.S. government vehicles. Shared government housing is sometimes available with this internship.
Description of Duties Intern serves as Assistant Volunteer Manager for approximately 75 part-time lighthouse and park volunteers. Intern delivers afternoon and evening lighthouse interpretive programs, schedules volunteers for operating hours, and facilitates volunteer trainings and appreciation events. Intern also staffs the Marin Headlands Visitor Center several times weekly and assists Park Rangers with park operational functions.
Responsibilities - Leads programs on the natural and cultural (man-made) resources of Point Bonita for the general public and school groups.
- Schedules volunteers to assist on lighthouse public days and special tours, and at the visitor center.
- Plans and implements volunteer trainings and appreciation events.
- Staffs the Main Headlands Visitor Center, answering phones, assisting public inquiries, taking campground reservations, issuing permits, and assisting operation of the retail outlet.
- Assists staff with operational and administrative duties including errands, photocopying, exhibit maintenance and repair, brochure management, and interpretive projects.
- Assists with public and resource safety projects.

Goal The main goal of the internship is to provide resource information to the public in a courteous manner while protecting the natural and cultural (man-made) site resources, such that visitors to the park and the lighthouse have a safe, informative, and enjoyable experience.
Knowledge/Skills Desired: - Excellent oral communication skills.
- Desire to impart resource and safety knowledge to the public.
- Good physical condition to be able to work outdoors for four hour periods in sometimes inclement weather (fog, wind & light rain), and walk a steep ½ mile trail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, occasionally under duress
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Knowledge of lighthouses, maritime navigational aids and local history helpful.

If you have no experience, a willingness to learn is alright. RVers are asked to provide the park 32 hours of service per week in exchange for a full hook-up pad and laundry facility. Position Description
Fort Pulaski National Monument is a wonderfully scenic park, located on Cockspur Island at the mouth of the Savannah River. Primary duties consist of entrance fee collection, visitor center operation, providing information and orientation, and "living" history (including cannon crew and musket demonstration). Many volunteers enjoy working in the Eastern National Parks & Monuments Association bookstore and doing maintenance and trail work. The park has multiple RV pads, complete with electricity, sewage, water, and a free community laundry room. Free telephone and internet access are also provided. Typically, each individual volunteer puts in 32 hours of service per week, with couples having their "off" days together in order to explore the hisorical and culturally rich local area.

The individual would assist with answering phones, filing, typing, data input, etc. The office is located adjacent to I-75, in south Naples, within a Comfort Inn motel. The volunteer would be working with wildlife biologist, fire management staff, refuge managers, and administrative staff. One bonus of this position is the opportunity to get to go out on the both refuges to occasionally assist with field work. Please include camper size, if applicable. Unfortunately our facilities limit camper size to less than 31 feet.

Position Description
The Office of Lands, Resources and Planning would very much appreciate the ongoing assistance of an individual willing to research, organize, and enter into a data base, information pertaining to a large number of Special Park Use permits, including those for utility Right of Ways. Attention to detail and basic computer skills with software programs such as Microsoft Excel or Access are essential. We would welcome someone who is willing to dedicate themselves to this project at least four hours per week, with eight or more hours weekly being preferable. While the majority of work will be within an office environment, there may be opportunites to accompany staff to field locations to view various projects. The National Capital Regional office is located on scenic Hains Point in East Potomac Park, just southeast of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. The building is relatively modern and houses a cafeteria which serves breakfast and lunch. This is an outstanding opportunity for an individual to gain insight into various permitting procedures while making a significant and much-needed contribution. We thank you for your consideration.

We need your help at the Gladie Cultural-Environmental Learning Center in the picturesque Red River Gorge Geologic Area of the Daniel Boone National Forest near Slade, Kentucky to staff the Learning Center Information Desk. This area is a favorite destination for rock climbers, hikers, nature enthusiasts and scenic viewers of all ages. Duties include: - Greeting the public, in a polite and positive manner

This is a wonderful opportunity to visit and live in one of the most unique areas of the Daniel Boone National Forest. The Red River Gorge is known for its abundant natural stone arches, unusual rock formations, and spectacular sandstone cliffs. It is home to White-haired Goldenrod, a plant which grows nowhere else in the world. Birds, deer, foxes and other animals can be seen regularly in the area. We can provide a campsite with electric, water and sewer hook or a one-bedroom apartment. Skills Needed: - Flexible and positive attitude
- Willingness to do a variety of jobs, cleaning restrooms, sweeping, etc.

Description of Duties br>The Presidio of San Francisco was a military post for over 200 years under the flags of three countries, Spain, Mexico and the United States. The Presidio not only has a rich military history, but it also has a Native American heritage and is a refuge for many locally to globally threatened species. As an intern, you will be developing and producing audio and video content for web pages and other digital distribution that interprets the cultural and natural significance of the Presidio. Position Description Mount Rainier National Park works with a wide variety of volunteers, including meadow rovers, campground hosts, meadow restoration assistants, greenhouse assistants, trail crews, research librarians, and nordic ski patrollers. Mount Rainier National Park receives far more volunteer applications than we have full-time volunteer positions. The vast majority of our volunteer work occurs between the months of June and September. Housing is limited, and international volunteers must meet special requirements. Position Description
IMMEDIATE OPENING! The position is located at the Alan Bible Visitor Center.The primary duty is to provide accurate information to park visitors about the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and recreational activities in and around the area. Volunteers will distribute written information to walk-in visitors; provide verbal and written information to phone inquires as well as answering mail requests. Secondary duties include: Open and/or close Visitor Center; operate a cash register for the Park Association; perform periodic bookstore inventory; collect and record visitor use statistics throughout the day; other duties as assigned. Physical activities may include lifting or carrying boxes (25 lbs.) and standing for long periods of time.You may also be required to drive a government vehicle. As A National Park Service Volunteer, you will be asked to participate in an initial orientation period prior to beginning your duties, as well as other training opportunities as they occur. This will include becoming familiar with the layout of the building and surrounding gardens and trails, learning about the mission of the National Park Service and Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the operation of the information desk, as well as completing sales transactions and the use of a cash register. Some voluntary reading and research will be necessary in order to become knowledgeable in the many aspects of visitor services at Lake Mead. Our volunteers enjoy meeting people from all parts of the world and find a great satisfaction in providing helpful, friendly information that makes a visitor’s experience enjoyable. A background check may be required for this position. You must be self-motivated; have good communication and interpersonal skills; willingness to learn; ability to answer phones in a professional manner; comfortable in operating cash register; ability to interact positively with a diverse group of visitors; a willingness to work independently within prescribed parameters; and an appreciation of the concept of teamwork. Computer skills are desirable. Volunteer must be atleast 18 years old. All volunteers are required to wear an official National Park Service Volunteer uniform shirt with name tags, which will be provided.

Duties Volunteers help with library reference needs, contact staff/public about research, conduct library/file research, fill copy orders, shelve materials, perform housekeeping/administrative tasks, identify specimens and update records, and conduct oral history interviews.
Volunteers need to be able to carefully handle historic photos, documents and artifacts in the collections and to follow all rules and protocols involved in the security of specific areas and objects in the collections.
Knowledge of digital scanning and file management, web page updating, data entry and digital photography is helpful. Knowledge in the area of botany, geology, and palentology is needed for identification of specimens and updating collection records.

The Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is looking for volunteers interested in working for one of the friendliest refuges in the country! We need help running a large Visitor Center, maintaining trails, leading canoe trips on the Rio Grande and much more! For 24 hours per couple or 32 hours per single volunteer, the refuge provides an RV pad, full hook-up, utilities, propane, washer/dryer and a large community room, all on beautiful refuge property. A minimum three month commitment is required. Great winter weather, the nearby Gulf of Mexico and a low cost of living make this area a favorite for volunteers. Applications for the winter/fall season are accepted through April.

INTERNSHIPS AT ASSATEAGUE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE The Natural Resource Management Division of Assateague Island National Seashore is seeking applicants for an internship opportunity in aquatic resources for the Fall 2007. POSITION DATES AND DESCRIPTION AQUATIC RESOURCES FALL INTERN: Sept 4th-Nov 16th (12 weeks)Intern will assist staff in estuarine water quality monitoring, beach water quality monitoring, macro-algae and fisheries surveys, tide gauges maintenance, atmospheric and weather resources monitoring programs, terrestrial vegetation studies and various other natural resource management activities. Applicant will gain experience working in a National Park, using water quality analytical instruments, and acquiring valuable hands-on experience conducting natural resource management field studies. Applicants with skills and interests in estuarine, marine, vegetation, wildlife, geophysical, biological and environmental sciences are encouraged to apply.Interns are paid $120 biweekly and free on-site housing is provided.AREA INFORMATIONAssateague Island National Seashore, managed by the National Park Service, is an Atlantic coast barrier island and shallow water estuary habitat. Located in northeastern Maryland, near the seaside resort of Ocean City, MD, Assateague Island is famous for its wild ponies and 37 miles of white, sandy beaches. Numerous outdoor recreational opportunities are available in the area including: fishing, crabbing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, camping and bird watching. The Natural Resource Management Division inventories, monitors, and manages biological, geological, and cultural resources and employs specialists in wildlife, vegetation, water quality, geographic information systems, and geophysical sciences. Working conditions vary according to season, but may include exposure to cold water, wind, waves, intense sun, heat, humidity, biting insects and poison ivy. Applicants should feel comfortable working in and on the water and from boats. Operation of two and four-wheel drive vehicles is required, so applicants must possess a valid state driver's license.Position dates are 12 weeks long, working 40 hours per week, generally Monday-Friday. Within reason, lengths and dates of placement can be adjusted to fit applicants' needs. Groceries, general shopping, medical facilities and other amenities are located within 7 miles of the Park. A car is recommended for transportation, but a bicycle may be adequate for some.Modern, furnished housing is provided free of charge and located close to Park headquarters and the beach. Applicants will most likely share a room (same sex) and share living areas. Amenities include: full kitchen, microwaves, pots, pans, plates, utensils, and air conditioning, free washer/dryers and local phone calls. Other housing amenities include screened-in porches, a volleyball court, bbq grills and a well-equipped fitness room. Smoking is prohibited inside housing, and pets are not allowed.
